Alliance for African Assistance

Agency Description
The Alliance for African Assistance is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in 1989 in San Diego, California by Walter Lam, a refugee from Uganda, to address the many needs of San Diego's growing African refugee population. The Alliance assists new arrivals to successfully integrate into the San Diego community. For over 20 years, Alliance for African Assistance has worked to provide assistance in the United States and abroad, to refugees, internally displaced persons, immigrants, those seeking asylum, victims of torture and war, distressed women and children and altogether those suffering from economical hardship.

We remain dedicated to providing social, cultural, and educational support to all refugees in the resettlement process including preparing host families; securing safe and affordable housing, help with rent and transportation, access to food, clothes and other necessities, health screenings and services at our community Health Clinic, enrolling children in school, English language classes and translation services, immigration services, financial literacy, mentoring, and job assistance and training. We run a Thrift Store, Safari Seconds, to provide free goods to our clients. Our child sponsorship program helps children in Uganda go to school. We have successfully resettled thousands of refugees from all over the world.
